Sacramento's founder, John Sutter, established a settlement in the Sacramento Valley with the help of the Mexican government in 1839, building an adobe fort and sawmill. When gold was discovered in 1848 at the mill, the resulting gold rush caused the city to expand rapidly into a center of commerce and transportation. In the late 19th century, the transcontinental railroad combined with advances in refrigeration and irrigation to make fruit-growing and food processing major industries in Sacramento. Crystal Cream & Butter was founded in 1901 and is still making local dairy products more than a century later. The Bercut-Richards packing company was established in 1931 in three-year old tomato-canning facility, and served as the Sacramento Army Depot during World War II. Although there has been some decline in agriculture in Sacramento in recent years, there has been an increased focus on tourism, education and healthcare.
